Winning Practices in Respite Care

Practice

#9 – Ensure that practitioners have the qualifications, skills, and essential attitudes required for respite services

To provide high-quality respite services, it is essential that practitioners possess both technical skills (know-how) and interpersonal qualities (soft skills).

Practitioners’ attitudes play a crucial role throughout the support process, particularly in respecting the dignity of care recipients. Active listening, empathy, respect, and compassion should guide every interaction.

Adequate and ongoing training is necessary to ensure that practitioners master appropriate tools and techniques and are able to provide services that are professional, personalized, and respectful of care recipients’ needs and expectations.

Practice

#10 – Provide practitioners with initial and ongoing training specific to respite care

Initial training is essential to ensure high-quality, safe, and adapted interventions that meet the needs of caregivers and care recipients. It helps strengthen practitioners’ skills, prevent burnout, and ensure the quality of respite services provided.

Ongoing training, in turn, helps maintain up-to-date skills, integrate new practices and knowledge, and ensure continuous adaptation to the evolving needs of caregivers and care recipients, as well as the challenges encountered in the field.
