Winning Practices in Respite Care

Practice

#4 – Develop an intervention philosophy that establishes the foundations of respite activities

By guiding practitioners’ approach toward caregivers and care recipients, the intervention philosophy promotes consistency in practices and strengthens the quality of the respite service provided. It is based on fundamental principles and values inherent to the social field, such as dignity, social justice, autonomy, mutual support, and compassion.
It may also encompass several essential elements of the respite service, including the development of a clear vision aligned with established objectives, as well as the methodology and preferred intervention approaches. By guiding practitioners’ approach toward caregivers and care recipients, the intervention philosophy promotes consistency in practices and strengthens the quality of the service provided.

Practice

#5 – Use an intervention methodology to facilitate the planning and implementation of the respite service

Having an intervention methodology facilitates the organization of the respite service by clearly distinguishing the processes carried out for caregivers and care recipients (with separate files).
It includes initial contact, needs assessment, service planning, implementation, and evaluation. The service ensures a gradual approach that takes into account the comfort level of both caregivers and care recipients at each stage (e.g., offering a preliminary meeting to get acquainted and/or visit the setting, proposing a trial period, starting with a half-day session, etc.).

Practice

#6 – Use one or more recognized intervention approaches adapted to the needs of caregivers and care recipients

The recommended approaches guide interventions and provide a reliable, relevant, and adapted framework that meets the needs of caregivers and care recipients. By combining various approaches and techniques, practices can be tailored to the specific characteristics of each individual involved in the respite service, thereby ensuring personalized and high-quality support.
These approaches promote a dyad-centred perspective focused on the caregiver/care recipient relationship, recognizing the expertise each person has regarding their own reality and valuing experiential knowledge, skills, self-determination, and capacity for engagement.
