“I was born into a family with a mother who has mental health issues. I have been living with this reality for a long time,” confides Jean-Philippe Dion, spokesperson for CAP santé mentale. His personal story reflects that of many Quebecers: one in five people live with a mental disorder, and supporting loved ones is a daily challenge. To meet this need, the organization launched CAP Mieux-Être, a digital application for those who support a person living with a mental health disorder.
“When I used the platform for the first time, a wave of emotion washed over me as I realized that the questions I’ve always asked myself are the same questions that others are asking,” says Jean-Philippe Dion. “We’re not alone.”
Inspired by the experiences of families and developed with mental health experts, the CAP Mieux-Être web platform answers questions that caregivers often ask themselves: How should I react to certain behaviours? What resources are available? How can we avoid exhaustion? “At 10 p.m., if you are anxious and wondering how to help the person you love, you will find reliable answers to your questions on this platform,” points out Jean-Philippe Dion.
It is this desire to break feelings of isolation that drives the project. “As a caregiver, we need support. I am lucky to have a close-knit family, with a father who is extremely involved in supporting my mother. That is what makes the difference: having a network, a family—both literally and figuratively—around the person we love,” adds Jean-Philippe Dion.
